From Gig Worker to Business Owner: How URATX Came to Be

Moumita Urias-Roy, co-founder of URATX, started her journey in the gig economy back in 2016, delivering food orders for platforms like Amazon Flex, Grubhub, and DoorDash. In 2019, she and her husband decided to start their own delivery service in Austin, Texas, to address the gap for reliable, large-scale deliveries, such as catering orders. What started as a small operation quickly grew to employ 200 drivers at its peak, offering better pay than the major delivery apps and focusing on professionalism and reliability. Despite the challenges of competing with larger companies, URATX continues to thrive by prioritizing service quality and maintaining strong relationships with clients and drivers alike.

Community-Driven Delivery: How URATX Pivoted During COVID-19

As COVID-19 disrupted daily life, community-driven delivery services in Austin sprang up to support local businesses and provide new opportunities for the unemployed. URATX, traditionally focused on large catering deliveries, adapted to meet the needs of smaller groups, such as apartment complexes and homeowner associations. With their professional catering equipment, URATX ensured that food arrived in ideal conditions, avoiding the cold or soggy results common with other services. Unique to URATX, half of the tips received were shared with restaurants, providing additional support to local eateries during difficult times. The company also expanded its offerings by delivering prepaid curbside pickups from stores like H-E-B and Sam’s Club, with a commitment to quality service through a more rigorous driver screening process.
